KFC - Kentucky Town

In 2021, KFC South Africa opened the doors to its very first mega pop-up store—Kentucky Town. This limited-time experience took place at The Zone in Rosebank, Johannesburg, and ran for 11 days, from November 25 to December 5. The pop-up was part of a broader celebration of the iconic brand’s birthday and offered fans an exclusive taste of something different.

As part of the festivities, KFC rolled out a special birthday menu that was available only at Kentucky Town. It featured bold new meals that fans had never seen before—experimental items that pushed the boundaries of traditional fast food. In true KFC style, the brand also brought back fan favourites such as the KFC Streetwise Chow and Spicy Chips, creating a nostalgic buzz for long-time lovers of the brand.

What made Kentucky Town even more meaningful was its purpose. All proceeds from the merchandise sold at the pop-up went toward the KFC Add Hope initiative, a program aimed at providing nutritious meals to children in need across South Africa. This added a strong social impact layer to what was already an exciting food and cultural event.

To top it all off, KFC used the platform to spotlight South African design talent. The brand collaborated with standout creatives Mzwanele Fani, the Cancel Wear duo, Karabo Phakathi and Senzo Nkabinde and Borotho Apparel's creative, Morena Moletsane.

Morena Moletsane's street wear t-shirt design (titled Streetwise Kings) drew inspiration from the artists nostalgic childhood memories.
The concept draws from childhood moments of playing without life's cares. The artist explains how after an intense time of playing soccer on the street, on a Friday evening with child hood friends , nothing would the beat the feeling of arriving home to the surprise of his mother having bought the family KFC chicken pieces for dinner.
